The research institute will bea leader in the disaster science related interdisciplinary research ofthe world, also supported by a national and international networkwith other research institutions.「第4回防災グローバルプラットフォーム会合」での声明（2013年5月、スイス・ジュネーブ）170を超える国々から政府、国際機関、NGOなどの関係者約3,500名が参加。この会議で災害科学国際研究所は声明を発表し、復旧・復興への援助に対する感謝、災害科学研究の必要性等を述べました。国連防災世界会議に向けた取り組み2015年3月に仙台で国連防災世界会議が開催されます。その一環として災害科学国際研究所では、東日本大震災の教訓と提言を示したHFA IRIDeS Review Reportの発刊や、市民向けのセミナー開催等を行ってきました。会議開催中には、シンポジウムや展示を行い、実践的防災学の成果を世界に向けて発信します。東北地方では、宮城県沖地震と呼ばれる地震が周期的に発生しており、東北大学では、この地震に備えるため、防災研究を進めてきました。しかし、東日本大震災は地震・津波・原子力事故が重なった巨大災害で、これまでの災害対策の弱点や限界が浮き彫りにされました。東日本大震災を経験した東北大学は、世界的災害科学の研究拠点として災害科学国際研究所を設立。文系・理系の垣根を越えて、被災地が抱える課題に対して解決への道を模索・提案していくとともに、実際の社会や暮らしの減災・防災に役立つ「実践的防災学」を構築します。In the Tohoku region, earthquakes centered inthe waters off Miyagi Prefecture occur inperiodic intervals. Tohoku University hasconducted studies on disaster prevention to beprepared for these earthquakes. However, theGreat East Japan Earthquake revealed theweaknesses and limitations of conventionalscientific and technological systems. As aglobal research center for Disaster Science,Tohoku University established the InternationalResearch Institute of Disaster Science -IRIDeS-.The IRIDeS will create a new discipline ofpractical disaster mitigation which can beuseful in a real-life situation, though seekingand offering solutions to a variety of problemsthat the disaster-affected areas have.Declaration at "the 4th Sessionof the Global Platform forDisaster Risk Reduction"Around 3,500 people from governments,international institutions and NGOs inover 170 countries participated in thissession. We made a declaration of IRIDeSat this meeting, thanking everyone fortheir support in the recovery andreconstruction of the Tohoku area afterthe earthquake, and calling attention tothe need for disaster science research.Activities Related to UN WorldConference on Disaster RiskReduction 2015The UN World Conference on DisasterRisk Reduction 2015 in Sendai is a goodopportunity for IRIDeS to disseminateresults of its practical research ondisaster science. IRIDeS released seriesof“HFA IRIDeS Review Report Focusingon the 2011 Great East JapanEarthquake”and will arrange lots ofconferences and exhibitions during theconference.05 06
