Community Outreach @ Tohoku UniversityCommunity Outreach is important to everyoneat Tohoku University.Throughout the year, Tohoku University hosts various workshopsand events aimed at promoting an interest in science among the region’s youth,while demonstrating the potential impactthat the university’s research has on the wider community.Science AngelsSummer Science SchoolOne of the most popular events in 2015 was the SummerScience School ? an opportunity for junior high schoolstudents to explore different aspects of engineeringthrough supervised hands-on experiments.In line with the theme of“Light and Electronics,”participants attempted to build devices using robot controlsystems, and light and radio wave signals.Tohoku University has always been a strong supporter of women in science. And in 2015, seventy-six female graduatestudents from the university’s various science departments were inducted into the Science Angels programme.Now in its 10 thyear, the Science Angels Programme celebrates the dynamism of women in science, and encouragesfemale graduate students to conduct research through engagement in outreach activities. Science Angelsserve as role models for young girls, and regularly give lectures and demonstrations at science events for schoolagechildren.TUFSA in MinamisanrikuIt’s not just through the classrooms and laboratories thatTohoku University made a difference last year. In June,some 40 students and staff went on a study tour of Minamisanriku,a coastal town that was badly hit by the GreatEast Japan Earthquake of 2011, and the devastating tsunamithat followed.Organized by TUFSA, Tohoku University’s ForeignStudents Association, the tour was a chance for internationalstudents to see first-hand the recovery efforts ofthe city and to find ways to contribute. For many, it wastheir first time in a disaster affected area.Through the non-profit organization OGA for Aid,the students helped to farm green onions with MiyagiGreen Farmers, a business which aims to revive and createa sustainable future for Minamisanriku’s agricultureindustry.The students also spent two days interacting withlocal community members. They heard of the challengesstill faced by residents and store vendors, but also foundinspiration from the many anecdotes of strength and perseverance.Science Open HouseChildren and adults alike alsomade several visits this year tothe university’s laboratories andworld-class research institutes fora behind-the-scenes look at howstudies are conducted.Tohoku University ANNUAL REVIEW 2015page: 12Tohoku University ANNUAL REVIEW 2015page: 13
