History ofTohoku UniversityFor more than a century, Tohoku University hasembraced its role of not just grooming the nextgeneration of leaders, but also arming them withthe most innovative technology that the world’sbest research teams can produce.And it achieved this by following the three tenetsthat have defined the university since itsfounding in 1907 ? Research First, Open Door andPractice-oriented Research and Education.Since the very beginning, the university’s OpenDoor policy has allowed it to tap on valuablehuman resources. Departing from the norms ofother imperial universities at the turn of the 20 thcentury, Tohoku University accepted graduatesfrom technical schools. And in 1913, it went astep further and ? despite opposition from thegovernment ? became Japan’s first university toaccept female students.Over the years, the university has been successfulin attracting brilliant researchers from aroundthe world. Following a Research First policy,these scholars pursued productive research andput their findings to work in the teaching of theirstudents. This led to the spirit of Practice-orientedResearch and Education that the university hasbecome famous for.Building on these three ideals, Tohoku Universityhas consistently tried to use its research successto address both local and global problems, aswell as to improve surrounding communities.Since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, theuniversity has been providing expertise and supportto the region through technological developmentand reconstruction efforts. More than fiveyears on, Tohoku University remains committedto the recovery of the region.
