2015HighlightsPartnership Agreement withUniversity of MelbourneTohoku University and the University of Melbournesigned a Strategic Partnership Agreement aimed atstrengthening ties. Both universities have long historiesof academic and research success, and it’s hopedthat the agreement will encourage future joint researchactivities and more exchanges among students, facultymembers and staff.TUFSA’s 50 th AnniversaryTohoku University Foreign Students Association celebrated50 years of promoting cultural diversity in thecommunity and welcoming students from all over theworld into our Tohoku University family.Top Global University ProjectTohoku University was selected by the Japanese governmentto be part of its Top Global University Project. Toachieve the goal of ranking among the world’s best 30academic institutions, Tohoku University kicked off itsown Global Initiative this year, with the wide-reaching InternationalJoint-Research Programme at its foundation.General Assembly of T.I.M.E.The university hosted the General Assembly of T.I.M.E.,a network of 53 technical and engineering institutionsfrom around the world. Members took the opportunity tostrengthen bi-lateral ties and encourage more studentmobility through the Double Degree Program.Pediatric Oncology CenterEstablishedTohoku University Hospital’s brand new Pediatric OncologyCenter became operational in January 2015. TUHis the only government-designated“Childhood CancerHospital Hub”within the Tohoku area. To strengthencross-organizational childhood cancer treatment, asystem to bring in patients from various locations hasalready been developed.Alliance Internationale LaunchUniversity President Susumu Satomi attended the officiallaunch of Alliance Internationale in France. TohokuUniversity also entered into a new agreement with theUniversity of Lyon for a liaison office to be attached toINSA-Lyon.Champions of the National SevenUniversities GamesFor the third year in a row, Tohoku University won theNational Seven Universities Athletic Games. Tohoku Universityremains the only university to come in first eachtime it has hosted the games.Homecoming Day’s Original SweetsFor Homecoming Day, the university teamed up withfamous local sweet shops, to offer exclusive cakes andpastries filled with blueberry jam produced by the Schoolof Agriculture.HeKKSaGOn Presidents’ConferenceMembers of the HeKKSaGOn university consortium gatheredon campus for 2 days of workshops and meetings.Participants exchanged ideas and promoted researchcooperation across a wide range of academic fields.Heartpump Gains TractionBy using a monopivot bearing, researchers at the Institute of Development,Aging and Cancer, in cooperation with AIST, were able to greatlyimprove on the antithrombotic and haemolytic properties of the pumpsystem, allowing for the production and eventual sale of a superior artificialheart pump system.UNWCDRRAcademics and experts on disaster management gatheredin Sendai for the United Nations’3 rdWorld Conferenceon Disaster Risk Reduction.
